How a VPN works
A virtual private network creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server. Instead of sending traffic directly through your local network to each destination, the device sends protected traffic to the VPN server, which forwards it to the internet.
Websites then see the VPN server's public IP address rather than the address normally presented by your internet connection. Your local network and internet provider can see that you are communicating with a VPN service, but the tunnel prevents them from reading the contents of properly configured VPN traffic.
What a VPN can protect
A VPN is useful on untrusted networks because it reduces what a local Wi-Fi operator can observe. It can also provide secure access to a company network, connect remote offices, or make traffic appear to originate from another network region.
Modern HTTPS already encrypts the content exchanged with most websites. A VPN adds a broader encrypted layer around network traffic and changes who operates the immediate exit point.
What a VPN does not solve
A VPN does not make you anonymous. Websites can still recognize an account, cookies, browser storage, payment details, or a distinctive device configuration. Malware, phishing, unsafe downloads, and compromised accounts remain threats.
The VPN provider becomes an important trust point because it operates the server through which traffic exits. Marketing claims such as no logs should be evaluated alongside technical design, independent audits, ownership, jurisdiction, and a clear business model.
Consumer and corporate VPNs
A consumer VPN usually provides internet exit servers in several regions. A corporate VPN is often designed to reach internal applications and may route only company traffic or all device traffic, depending on policy.
Both use tunnel protocols, authentication, encryption, and key management, but their goals differ. Consumer services emphasize privacy and location choice, while enterprise systems emphasize controlled access to private resources.
Choosing and using a VPN
Look for maintained applications, modern protocols, transparent security documentation, sensible default settings, and a provider that explains what operational data it processes. Free services deserve particular scrutiny because network infrastructure is expensive to operate.
After connecting, check the public IP, DNS behavior, and whether applications continue to use the expected route. A successful connection indicator is useful, but an independent network check confirms the visible result.
