Yes—the visible public address usually changes
When a VPN tunnel is active, internet traffic is forwarded through a VPN server. Websites receive the connection from that server and normally see its public IPv4 or IPv6 address instead of the address assigned to your home, office, or mobile connection.
Your device still has local network addresses, and your provider still maintains the underlying connection. The VPN changes the public exit used for routed traffic; it does not erase the network configuration beneath the tunnel.
Why the location changes too
IP location databases associate the VPN exit address with a country, region, or city. Selecting a server in another region can therefore change the approximate location shown by websites.
The result may not match the exact server building. Providers can register address blocks in one place, route them elsewhere, or move infrastructure faster than location datasets update.
When the old address may still appear
A disconnected tunnel, split-tunnel rule, unsupported IPv6 path, browser proxy setting, or application that bypasses the VPN can use the normal connection. Some VPN applications include a kill switch to block traffic if the protected route fails.
Browser-based real-time communication can expose network candidates for connectivity, although modern browsers and privacy protections reduce this risk. DNS queries can also use a resolver outside the intended tunnel if the VPN configuration is incomplete.
How to verify the change
Check your public IP before connecting, then connect to the VPN and reload the checker in a new request. The visible address should differ unless the VPN is using an unusual same-network arrangement.
Also compare IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, test DNS resolution, and confirm the expected server region. Disconnect and verify that the original network address returns. This sequence tests the route rather than relying only on an application status icon.
What the change does not hide
Changing an IP does not sign you out of accounts, clear cookies, remove browser storage, or prevent a site from recognizing information you voluntarily provide. A VPN is one privacy and security layer, not a complete anonymity system.
