The short answer
Your public IP address is the network address that internet services see when your connection reaches them. It is assigned or presented by your internet provider, mobile carrier, company network, VPN, or another gateway between your device and the public internet.
An IP address is necessary for routing. When you request a web page, the network needs an address to which it can return the response. This does not mean the address identifies you personally. It usually identifies a connection, gateway, or provider-controlled network endpoint.
Public IP versus private IP
Devices inside a home or office commonly use private addresses such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or addresses from private IPv6 ranges. These addresses work inside the local network and are not directly routed across the public internet.
A router often translates traffic from many private devices to one public IPv4 address using Network Address Translation. As a result, a phone, laptop, television, and game console can appear to websites under the same public address.
What an IP address can reveal
A public IP can usually be associated with an internet provider and a broad geographic area. The estimate may point to a nearby city, a regional network hub, or the registered location of an address block. It is not GPS and should not be treated as a street-level location.
Websites also use IP addresses for security controls, fraud detection, regional content, rate limits, and basic network diagnostics. Those uses become more privacy-sensitive when an address is stored or combined with accounts, cookies, or other identifiers.
Why your address may change
Many residential and mobile connections use dynamic addresses. Your provider can assign a different address after a router reconnects, a lease changes, or traffic moves through another carrier gateway. Some customers pay for a static address that remains stable.
A VPN changes the public address visible to websites because traffic exits through the VPN provider. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can also produce a different result because the two connections use different networks.
Checking safely
